Easy Home Decorating Tips For A Minimalist

If you’re here reading this blog post, then you’re probably someone who’s interesting in decorating your home but may find that it’s a little too much work or even a little intimidating. You may even think you aren’t creative enough. You’re wrong! Don’t overthink it! I’m no expert in home decor, but I do love to make our house a home by adding my look and what makes me happy. You can do the same!

I have come a long way since I first started decorating our home. I even look back at pictures and cringe at some of the things I put on my walls or on shelves and honestly, I’m still learning a lot about my home and what looks good inside. I’ve learned so much from other bloggers on Instagram and Pinterest. They inspire me daily! So, I wanted to share with you some home decor tips that I have learned throughout the past few years that have helped me create a home that I love.

  1. Neutral Colored Walls – I know this isn’t really a “decorating tip”, but First things first, you want to be sure you have a neutral base to work with, so neutral paint is a MUST! Whether you lean towards the cooler tones or whether you prefer the warmer tones, GO NEUTRAL! I don’t know why this makes such a difference on the look, but it just does. Neutrals go with everything, so it’s going to always match whatever season you’re in. I also think it makes your home cozier, which is important too.
  2. Wood Decor – This is something that is so easy to use and can stay up throughout the year. You’ll want to look for wooden beads, frames, candle sticks, bowls, wooden crates, wooden spoons. These are just a few ideas. You can even stain wood to make it match. For instance, if you have a cooler toned wall like gray, then get a gray stain or look for wood items that are stained gray. And use that for your wall decor too. If you’re using warmer tones, you can use brown stain. These will be things that will stay up all year and all you will have to do is add in a little bit of seasonal decor.
  3. Whites – I love brightening things up with anything white! I feel like it makes things look clean. And of course, it goes with everything so you will be able to use it all year around. Look for white dishes and candle holders, risers or pedestals, pitchers for your seasonal flowers, anything white. Think outside the box a little bit.
  4. Matte Black – Black is classic! I go through phases where I will sometimes use black and sometimes not. But it is a neutral color and looks great with cool and warm tones. When looking for items that are black, go for something that is smaller or narrow, so the black doesn’t overpower the look you’re trying to achieve. Think more like wrought iron. Candle sticks, lanterns, trays, picture frames, mirrors, small vases, or even candles with a black container.
  5. Linens – Yes, linens! Flour sack towels, a table Runner and burlap. Fabrics, pillows, placemats, cloth napkins, you can do SO MUCH with linens! You want these neutral so you can use them all year. They add so much texture in different areas in your home.
  6. Baskets – Of course baskets are a necessity too. Since they come in so many different sizes, you can use them in many different places in your home. They also come in lots of different colors and styles so you will have plenty to choose from. Just remember to keep them neutral.

This list may seem like a lot, but I bet you have a lot of these things at home. If you don’t, then hit up the Goodwill and the Dollar General. And don’t forget about spray paint! If you have some things at home that you love but they’re the wrong color, get some paint and do a little DIY. It doesn’t have to be expensive to create a home that you love. Make it your style, make it cozy, and make it a home where you want to be.
