DIY No Sew Table Runner

Last spring, I redecorated our bedroom. I was going for a vintage farmhouse theme (Simple Vintage Farmhouse Bedroom) and really wasn’t sure how I wanted to decorate my antique washstand. I absolutely love this piece of furniture!! My MIL bought it for me after we built our house. It was originally for my bathroom, but I’m always rearranging, so I decided to move it in my bedroom.

Once I moved it into my bedroom I knew I had to decorate it to match my Vintage Farmhouse theme. I really wanted a runner for the top, but I didn’t have one that I needed, so I thought about making my own. Now let me go ahead and tell y’all that I DO NOT SEW!! In fact I hate to sew. It has to be too perfect and that just doesn’t work for me. I actually envy people who can sew. Anyway if I can’t make it without a hot glue gun and a glue stick then it AIN’T Happening!!

I checked out my craft room to see if I could find some things to make a runner and this is what I found that I thought would work:

  • burlap
  • old white sheet
  • lace ribbon
  • jute
  • scissors
  • glue stick
  • glue gun

Now let me show you what I came up with.

First, I cut a rectangle (in the size that I wanted) out of the white sheet and ironed out all the wrinkles. Then, I glued jute all around the sides like this.

Once I finished that, I cut a piece of burlap that was a few inches shorter than the sheet so I could layer the runners. I frayed the sides until they were pretty even all the way around and added some ribbon to the burlap to give more of a vintage look.

I ended up adding two strips of ribbon on each end.

This was so easy! Now, it definitely isn’t perfect and I’m completely okay with that, but there was one thing I would’ve done differently. If you look, you can see where the jute pulled the sheet when I glued it. So the only thing I would change is using burlap ribbon about a 1/2 inch thick. I think that would definitely help with the pulling. But, other than that, it worked out great for what I was needing. I had everything at home, I didn’t have to sew, and it gave me the look I was going for without spending any money. That’s a win for me!
